Shopping For The Christmas Spirit
(THIS WEEK: Smart Christmas Shoppers)
Getting into the holiday or Advent spirit might be analogized
to smart Christmas shopping.
It takes more than resurrecting a dusty nativity set from the basement or placing a circle of candles in the middle of your dining room table. I certainly do not suggest a visit to the mall as your kick-starter.
My personal portal into the season has always been through the writings of “Luke the Physician.” His healing pen seemed to be writing to me from the beginning of his gospel:
“Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.” Luke 1:1-4 (NKJV)
Shopping for the holiday spirit is harder if you don’t know the certainty of things.

Commercialism-gone-rampant, pagan and “competitive” belief systems, family visits, time and money pressures and the like can contribute to a stunted and confusing season.
A person sincerely shopping for the real meaning of this holy day makes a list of what’s really important and follows it like a playbook. I’d put Luke at the top of the list.
Then, that Advent candle will light up more than your dining room.
PORTAL TO HEAVEN: A great Christmas shopper has to prioritize their day by store location, traffic routes and budget. If we can do natural things so naturally, why can’t we do spiritually things, well, spiritually?
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God…
