“Oh, Dad,” my daughter Angelique reassured me, “Don’t worry. Will and I were best friends before we ever got married.”
Infatuation, looks, the in-crowd and so many factors almost assure doom for many young - and older - couples. But friendship lasts a lifetime.
Friendship is art and science and everything in between and it would probably take several lifetimes to master it. But why not try to squeeze it into just one lifetime?
Then again, there are those who weren’t quite best friends before marriage. But as rings symbolize eternal bonds, we can practice on becoming a best friend for the length of our marriage and we get this bonus: we also get a best friend. From experience, I can tell you that works.
All of the qualities and support that a close friend offers at any stage in life are especially noticed as we grow through better or worse, richer or poorer, sickness and in health.
It makes you want to redefine the term, “trophy wife.”
PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Whether as a single or couple, the development of a rich friendship is a clear portal to heaven as we we get a living example of Christ walking alongside us - and we, like Jesus, walking alongside someone else.
