The Dirt Under God's Fingernails

Sometimes, the unfolding of anything appears to be quite by accident.

For several years, I drove my riding mower to the side yard without noticing a foot-high wall of stacked slate that was a boundary of sort. Eventually, I cleared around it a little and dubbed it “The Secret Garden” to capture the kids’ attention. That, it did.

The following spring, I brought some mulch and we at least had some shape developing.

The next year, we cleared it a bit and found some rocks buried in the dirt. When 9 year-old Grant and 7 year-old London came across some flat pieces of slate about the size of gravestones, I began tethering a tale to them. It actually became a great impetus for them to continue our work.

But the stones we were uncovering were getting too big for my back and so a kind neighbor with plenty of strength helped and together with the tractor we were able to arrange the basics of a rock garden.

Then, The Secret Garden seemed as if it should be a tribute to our military seeing that it was next to our flagpole. I got a vision of a statue of a soldier in the middle. A chance detour in New Jersey led me to a figurine of a saluting Marine.

By coincidence, it came together around Memorial Day. How did that happen?

At life’s end, we will find that the unfolding our days will be much like our military garden in that we will understand the timing of events and see the dirt under the fingernails of God from his working in the garden of our souls.

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Sometimes, “coincidences” are “Godincidences” that make more sense in heaven than they do on earth. But as God unfolds vision in our lives, they become portals to heaven that seem to be a Jacob’s Ladder of sorts.

‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’…Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
