Junk, Gunk & Funk

There are flea markets and then there is Brimfield, Massachusetts which is the largest swap meet of its kind in the nation. Hundreds and hundreds of dealers and thousands of buyers show up. Everything from old canoes that Pocahontas might have used to rusted hand sickles to gads of Persian rugs to bed frames to highly (in)digestible foods. Well, you get the picture. Oh yeah, there are plenty of curled up black and white photos there as well. Why are people obsessed with stuff that others discarded years ago - and probably many times over at that? Whether it’s sentimentality or the fact that everything eventually comes back in style, I have to admit it looked like miles and miles of…junk. I realized it’s where I’m at in life. Maybe after I get rid of my garage full of stuff, it’ll end up there and I’ll finally become an official “downsizer.”

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: As humans, we cling to things and then cling some more and it’s a task to separate ourselves from the gravity of materialism’s pull. The heart is the same way: it hangs onto to antique hurts, habits, addictions and materialism and finds it terribly hard to let go…just ask the confessing Augustine.

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…

Hebrews 12:1 NKJV
