Joy has got to be like a football running back that just won’t go down. He breaks tackles and drags someone on his legs into the end zone.

The third candle on the Advent wreath represents joy and it could be represented by a merry countenance. But it is more than that.

It has to be stubborn.

Holidays and funerals don’t mix. When Dad passed away many years ago in December, our family limped through Christmas.

In such a situation, how does one light the Candle of Joy on the Advent Wreath? Do we bluff it or visit the land of denial?

One of the most incredible aspects of Christmas is that of the bookends of the kingdom of God. Christ has come and will come again and that profound buffer surrounds us like a protective shield of hope, peace, joy and love - the representative assurances of each candle on the Advent wreath.
