Many women have been abused…by fishing days.
Many men have abused others…with their fishing stories.
Many don’t understand either.
The salient hook about fishing is that it catches some of the great themes of masculinity.
For one, there’s a bit of danger. Commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations. Just look at the amount of “widow’s watches” in New England and seacoast and river towns.
For another, it’s worse than Las Vegas. You spend money and time and may come up with nothing and that exact risk-taking aspect has been in the heart of every great man.
But a more subtle vibe of fishing is peace; the great possibility that the day or week could be the solemnity of time on the water. If that’s with a son ,daughter, spouse, relative or just God, so much the better.
God sent Jesus on the ultimate fishing trip and Christ caught fisherman and whole bunch more: “For God so loved the world that He sent His only Son.”
It would be the most dangerous fishing trip ever, eternity’s great gamble and the proven paradigm for peace.
Now that’s a fish story worth telling.
